Installation

Sun-Mar Units are designed for easy Do-it Yourself Installations
This section covers Contents of the shipping carton, vent installation, toilet installation
and handling excess liquid.

Shipping cartons include (at no extra cost) everything needed to install and operate the unit.
The only exception is the 80mm waste pipe and fittings needed to connect a low flush toilet to a Central Composting Unit.

Contents Of Shipping Carton

The shipping carton on all units:

  • An Owner's Manual (specific to each unit).
  • Warranty card.
  • Peat Mix (30L bag) for starting off the unit.
  • Rake for periodic clearing of the evaporating chamber.
  • "Compost Quick" enzyme for speeding up composting.
  • “Microbe Mix” bacteria for inoculating waste.
  • Complete vent kit including all pipe, fitting and vent intake assembly.

Installing the Vent Stack

The vent kits included in the shipping carton are sufficient for installation in most single story buildings. If more is needed they are normally easy to find. 50mm pipe is PVC Central vacuum tubing, and 75mm and 100mm pipe is ABS sewer pipe.

These drawings show some of the more common vent stack configurations.ventst.gif (12180 bytes)

Electrical Installation

All electric units are supplied with a power cord and pre-molded plug, which connects to a standard three (3) pin 220 Volt outlet and powers both the fan and heating element.

Toilet Installation
(Central Units Only)

Central Composting toilet systems require a toilet in the bathroom to be connected to the composting unit. The following guidelines may be useful in planning this portion of the installation.

A typical installation with
two 1pint toilets.

vent1.gif (15383 bytes)

Toilet connected with waste piping dropping at 9mm to 12mm per meter.

Installation with platform mounted Sealand 511 where height is a problem.

One Pint Flush Toilet

Mount flush toilets to the floor with a 75mm diameter four (4) bolt flange supplied with pan.

Connect water at the rear of the toilet.

Connect 80mm waste pipe (not supplied) from the toilet to the composting unit. Piping should be either 45 degrees or more to the vertical, or 2º-3º (that is a drop of 9mm - 12mm per metre) so that the waste travels with the liquid.

Install multiple toilets by using a 'Y' fitting above the waste inlet of the composter.

Limit horizontal distance to 6m where possible. Units have been successfully placed over 12m away, although in such cases an extra weekly flush through may be needed, together with an easily accessed inspection port(s) within the waste pipe.

Dry Toilet

Bolt the Dry Toilet to the floor immediately above the waste inlet of the A/F unit. The toilet chute extends 100mm below the toilet base, so that it can sleeve into the 115cm long waste pipe piece, or directly into the waste inlet transition piece.

A second toilet is not recommended when using a Dry Toilet

The 115cm long 25cm diameter pipe piece supplied can be cut to size, so the toilet mounting surface can be anywhere from 92-207mm above the surface the composter is placed on.

The maximum recommended height of the waste inlet pipe assembly is the the length of the pipe piece (115cm) plus the waste inlet transition piece (13cm) Adding additional pipe lengths, while possible, may make it more difficult to ensure there is a downdraft at the toilet seat.
